This Week's Brews

Here's our latest update on what beers you can find on tap this week at the Black Heart. We have yet another diverse and delicious collection, with draughts from Magic Rock, Stone & Wood, Thornbridge, and more.

First, we have an intriguing and unique pair from Australian brewery Stone & Wood, their Cloud Catcher American-style pale ale, and their wheat ale The Gatherer. The Cloud Catcher is a full-flavoured, full-bodied, limited-release ale. It boasts aromas of apricots and orange, tastes of tangerine, citrus, spice and toasted malts, and blends pale and crystal malts into a dry, clean, lightly hopped, bitter finish. 5.5%.

The Gatherer is a Stone & Wood recipe which is brewed with seasonal ingredients and changed up every year. 2017’s edition adds cooling cucumber, mint and watermelon to make a thirst-quenching American-style wheat beer that’s crisp, dry, and lip-smacking. This is a special one too, as there’s only 2 kegs of it in the UK! 5%.

Next, we’ve got a classic pair of brews from Huddersfield’s Magic Rock, the Salty Kiss and the Demonali. The Salty Kiss is a well-known collaboration beer with Danish brewery Kissmeyer. The World Beer Cup 2014 Gold Winner is a traditional German-style Gose flavoured with gooseberries, sea buckthorn and sea salt. Tart, lightly sour, fruity, and refreshing with a defined but subtle saltiness, the Salty Kiss is sweet and slightly intense, almost like a lemonade, before it comes to its dry, sour, light bitter finish. 4.1%.

The Demonali is Magic Rock’s IPA, a hazy, golden orange-coloured hop medley. Aromas of citrus, spice, honeysuckle, sweet hop juice, and floral notes meet semi-sweet, malty, citrus flavours, rounded off by a firm and assertive bitterness. 7.2%.

Next, we have a delicious, hop-packed collaboration between Wylam and Simply Hops, the Upside Down southern hemisphere IPA. Created to celebrate Leeds’ Hop City 2017 festival, the Upside Down is a fruity, citrusy IPA brewed with Vermont Ale Yeast and a disrespectful amount of Australian Vic Secret hops. 6.4%.

Then we’ve got West Yorkshire brewery Vocation with their Bread & Butter golden ale(/Blond ale), an easy drinking, everyday beer with a twist. Layers of American hops are set against a backbone of British malts, making for plenty of character. With fresh flavours and aromas of pine, peach, lychee and citrus fruits, the Bread & Butter is tempered by a smooth, rounded bitterness. 3.9%.

Finally, we have Peak District brewers Thornbridge and their Cocoa Wonderland. “Specially brewed in collaboration with the girls at Cocoa, Ecclesall Road, Sheffield to celebrate their 10th anniversary”, this porter pours black with a tan head. It has aromas of milk chocolate and cocoa and tastes lightly sweet, with a mildly bitter, chocolatey, and slightly roasty finish. 6.8%.

This Week's Brews

Here we are with our latest update on what beers you can find on tap this week at the Black Heart. We’ve got another diverse and delicious collection with exceptional west London brewers Weird Beard, Sussex’s Burning Sky, Danish masters To Øl , mad Swedish scientists Beerbliotek, and our favourites, north London’s Beavertown.

First, we've got Weird Beard's Metallica-themed brown ale, Master of Nuggets. This beast pours dark brown to dark black, with a slender beige head. It's a big, malty beer, bitter but sweet, with aromas of hazelnuts and raspberry. The taste is full of rich chocolate, earthy herbs, and coffee notes, making for a roasty, lightly spiced, unique and enjoyable ale. 7%.

The next offering from Weird Beard is something of a contemporary classic, with a nostalgic tint. The Five O’Clock Shadow is Weird Beard's "Desperate Dan" IPA, a complex, intense, bitter, but well-balanced beer. The taste is malty with notes of biscuit, and boasts tropical juice flavours, with citrus and pine hops. It's aromatic but fresh, with prominent herb and hop notes. The tasty finish is dry and bitter. 7.3%.

Then we have Burning Sky’s Devil’s Rest IPA. This full-strength IPA is a nod to "the best" that the brewer found whilst travelling the US. The result is deceptively drinkable and full of flavour. The pour is a burnt orange colour, and its aroma is hoppy and fruity. Bitter orange marmalade and toasty notes ring through big hop hits of juice and bitterness. The taste is fruity but piney and dry, with sweet malts. With a medium-full body and a balanced, lightly bitter finish, this one is rather drinkable considering its 7% abv.

Up next, we've got To Øl's Don’t Gose Towards The Light! This gose pours a dark reddish-purple colour, and is medium bodies. Its aroma is yeasty with sweet fruity berry notes. The taste is quite tangy and tarty with a long, bitter finish, and lots of cherry and blueberry flavours. 3.5%

Our next beer, Beerbliotek's Nah… Just Had Some Ice Cream, continues where To Øl's gose left off. This cheeky, light-bodied Berliner Weisse pours a hazy purple-pink. Its aroma is sour and tart, with notes of blueberry yogurt. The taste is sweet, fruity, and tarty, accompanying an intense sour, dry finish. 3.5%.

Finally, we round things up with Beavertown's Normcore Baltic Porter. Inspired by "a passion for a good Porter", Normcore has had nothing added, nor been barrel aged, or seen any complicating of the brewing process - Beavertown have simply released this beer as is, without compromise. Accordingly, this is a rich, intense, and complex beer. Medium-full bodied, Normcore boasts notes of chocolate, fresh coffee, and a slight smokiness, giving way to walnut and fudge flavours. The bitterness balances out the sweetness of the malt. The finish is long, dry and roasty, lightly bitter and robust. 7.8%.

That’s it for this week’s beers, check back next week for another update. And as ever, keep your eyes peeled for updates of beers and bands on our Instagram.

This Week's Brews

17311245_10154177335411721_1038861611654604951_o.jpg

Here we are with the latest update on what beers you can find on tap this week at the Black Heart. We’ve got a diverse bunch - three of which are from some great London breweries - which should get mouths watering.

First up, we have a jazzy Hepcat session IPA from South London brewers Gipsy Hill. It swaggers on in with big fruit, juicy notes and tropical floral hops, balancing out the light, malt body and its taste of caramel. It pours a hazy golden shade and has a thick creamy head. The bitterness is exquisite and makes for easy drinking. 4.6%.

Then we’ve got a very tasty and refreshing Berliner Weisse-style beer from Bethnal Green’s Redchurch brewery. The Tartelette Urban Farmhouse is part of Redchurch’s Wild Series - a range of beers brewed with “wild yeasts, mixed and bacterial fermentation and foraged and cultivated ingredients some of which are fermented and aged and matured in a variety of oak barrels”. At 4.5%, the Tartelette is another easy drinker, with a soft and zingy sour edge. Its fruity, tart taste with notes of lemon and grapefruit work well with the dry, medium body.

From east London, we have 40FT Brewery’s answer to a Hefeweizen, the Street Weiss. This wheat ale has a hazy golden-amber colour and a small head. The aromas and flavour are fruity, with notes of wheat and malt, as well as a spicy, slightly sharp clove taste. Finely balanced, light, and perfect for the warmer days coming. 5%.

Finally, we have the always delicious Sierra Nevada with their Beer Camp IPA. Deceptively drinkable, the Beer Camp sneaks big flavour and complex notes into its light colour and piney-citrus/tropical hops. The deep malt foundation underneath and the solid but not overpowering bitterness balance very well with the grapefruit and orange peel sweetness in its flavours. 6.9%.

On top of that lot, we still have some Brooklyn Bel Air Sour Ale and East IPA left over from Brooklyn Brewery’s epic takeover on Monday. These won’t be around for long, so get down quick!

That’s it for this week’s beers, check back next week for another update. And as ever, keep your eyes peeled for updates of beers and bands on our Instagram.

Brooklyn Brewery Takeover At The Black Heart

1488884850877.jpeg

We’ve got something very special coming for you next week. On Monday 27th, the ever-stellar Brooklyn Brewery take over the Black Heart! The gig upstairs is free and first come, first served (more about that below), but we’ll have plenty of goodies on downstairs so no one will miss out! Here’s what we’ll have on offer.

In the venue upstairs, only Brooklyn cans will be available. We'll have Brooklyn Lager, the Brewery's award-winning flagship beer, brewed to a pre-Prohibition recipe. Dry-hopped, fresh, flowery, flavourful, 5.2%. Always a winner. We'll also be carrying Brooklyn's American Ale, a heavier, more malty and blended, dry-hopped ale, at 4.5%. And we'll have Brooklyn's East IPA, originally a summer seasonal but a year-round offering for over two decades now, it features English malts and hops brewed in the classic, heavily-hopped style of 19th century English beers. 6.9%. I say.

Downstairs at the bar, we'll have a very special 2 kegs of Brooklyn Bel Air Sour Ale and East IPA on tap. Bel Air is a breezy, tart, dry-hopped sour ale. Easy to drink and not overly sour. 5.8% We'll also have Sorachi Ace and Brooklyn Tripel Burner 750ml sharing bottles. The Sorachi Ace is a classic saison, a dry, hoppy, golden farmhouse ale featuring the rare Sorachi Ace hop. 100% bottle re-fermentation with Champagne yeast sees the beer emerge with bright, spicy lemon-zest aromas. 7.6%. The Brooklyn Tripel Burner is a licorice-spiced tripel aged in white wine barrels. With a strong Belgian-inspired tripel base, this is a heady, aromatic ale. 10.6%. And finally, we'll also have 330ml bottles of Brooklyn's Black Chocolate Stout, the brewery's award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style. Derived from three mashes brewed for each batch of this beer, the Stout boasts deep dark chocolate flavour blended with specialty roasted malts. 10%.

As for the evening's entertainment, Winnebago Deal, Primitive Weapons, and Henry Blacker are set to devastate the Heart as they kick off Brooklyn Sound, the second edition of Brooklyn's annual music tour. Doors are at 7pm and are free entry. While this show is first come, first served, priority is given to those who snapped up the free tickets from our site. After 8.30pm, all unclaimed tickets (the reserved tickets that people haven't shown up to claim) will be released back in to the wild and non-ticket holders will be allowed in.

We can't wait to see all of you there. And as always, keep your eyes peeled for updates on this, and more beers and bands, on our Instagram.

This week's brews.

We’re back for our weekly update on what you can expect to see on draught in the coming week. We’ve got something for everyone with a couple of Oktoberfest beers as well as a Rogue pale, a Thornbridge stout and a To Ol Berliner Weisse.

Weihenstephaner Festbier

This marzen beer is brewed especially or the Festbier season and comes in at 5.8%. It pours a clear yellow with a small amount of white head. The aroma is light malt, a little banana and some grass. The flavour is more lager than marzen, light malt and a little sweet biscuit. Finishes crisp. All in all a really refreshing easy drinking beer from the world’s oldest brewery.

Sierra Nevada Festival Bier

The second installment of Sierra Nevada’s annual Oktoberfest series, this beer is brewed in collaboration with Germany’s Mahrs Brau. Brewed using the nearly lost Record hop variety, it’s a new take on the classic festival style. It pours a dark gold colour. The aroma is classic festival beer whilst the Record hops give it a spicy hop note. At 6% its one to savour.

To Ol LikeWeisse

We’re not going to lie, we’re a little obsessed with To Æl at the moment. We’re yet to taste something we haven’t liked, and more importantly, that you guys haven’t liked, and you know what they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. If you feel LikeWeisse then you’ve gotta try this Berliner Weisse. At 3.8% it’s a great all day choice, something To Ol wanted to make sure of. The colour is a cloudy light yellow, with a small head. Aroma wise there is some citrus fruit and a fair amount of yeast. The flavour is mildy sour, with citrus fruit and some peach going on as well. The finish is quite mild and wheaty. Very easy to drink.

Rogue Juniper Pale

This week’s Rogue beer is the Juniper Pale Ale. Pouring a cloudy amber colour with a medium off white head, it has an aroma of fruity toffee, malt sweetness and pine. The flavour obviously has a prevalent amount of juniper to it, but is also quite floral. Finishes quite hoppy and dry. 5.2%

Thornbridge Baize

We finish with Baize from Thornbridge, a chocolate mint stout. It pours nearly black with a medium off white head. The aroma is, as you’d expect, dominated by chocolate and mint. The flavour follows with the bitterness of the chocolate balancing what would otherwise be a rather sweet beer. Imagine alcoholic ‘After Eight’ mints.  At 5.5% you might wake up with a hangover but your breath will be great!

Check back next week for another update on what to expect on draught. There will be some news about the Founders Halloween tap takeover coming your way soon too!

This week's brews

Its time for our weekly run down of what you can expect to see on draught this week.

We loved, and I think you all did too, the bottles we got in from Scotland's very own Fierce Beer, so we've gone and got two of their beers in keg this time. First up we've got Peanut Riot. This porter pours almost black with a small tan head and has an aroma of dark chocolate and unsurprisingly a fairly big hit of peanut. The flavour follows, with more chocolate, peanut butter and a little salt. Finishes with the roasted malt coming forward a little more. 6.5%. 94 IBU. Vegan.

Next is Granadilla Guerilla, a west coast style IPA with big tropical flavours and plenty of passionfruit. Pours a hazy orange/gold colour with a nose that gives off passionfruit, a slight creaminess and some citrus zest. The flavour has more citrus hops than passionfruit going on, but its still well balanced, tangy would be the best word for it. Finishes bitter and dry. 5.5%. 45 IBU. Vegan

And now for something completely different, Orange Boom from Siren. This berliner weisse starts life broadly as Siren's very drinkable Calypso, they then add loads of fresh orange zest and juice. Its pours yellow with an off white head that holds quite well. The aroma is a little wheat, lots of orange and bitter fruit. Flavour is orange, both zest and juice, lots of fruit. Its reasonably sour and finishes dry. 2.7%. Vegan.

We finish with the strongest beer of the lot, Special Relationship from Magic Rock in collaboration with Oregon's Gigantic Brewery. They describe it as a 'reconstructed manhattan ale' and you can see what they're getting at. It pours hazy brown whilst the nose has lots of cherry, bourbon and red fruit going on. Flavour continues in that vein, with a little more spice, some coconut and plenty of deep malt. Finishes subtly with spice and a little bitterness. 8%. 15 IBU. Vegan.

Thats your lot for this week, check back next week for another update. As ever keep your eyes peeled for updates of beers and bands on our Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ourblackheart/

This week's brews!!

Another week, another round of great beer. We've got some Yeastie Boys, Magic Rock, Beavertown and Sierra Nevada coming your way.

First up is the Yeastie Boys Gunnamatta. A tea leaf IPA that uses Earl Grey Blue flower tea in the brew, its nose is of tea, citrus and some tropical fruit. Taste is similar to the nose, but with the tea a little more prominent and some bitter orange. At 6.5% its not a session choice for most but with notes of iced tea its definitely the best way to soak up the last of the summer rays.

Secondly is a real Black Heart favorite, we love our sour beers and this is a truly great one, Magic Rock's Salty Kiss. A traditional german Gose brewed with gooseberries, sea buckthorn and sea salt. Aroma is salty, with mild gooseberry. Flavor is fruity, citrus and more gooseberry. The sourness isnt overwhelming so if you've never tried a sour this is a great starting beer. 4.1% Also available in cans.

Next up, a real heavyweight, Beavertown's Smog Rocket. This smoked porter comes in at 5.4% and has a smokey nose with some dairy and roasted coffee. Flavour follows that with the roasted malts taking center stage a little more. If smokey beers are your thing, you can't go wrong.

We finish with Chico's finest, Sierra Nevada. We've got our lucky mits on their 11.5 Plato Session IPA. Fruity malt aroma thats quite sweet. Flavour is big on the floral hops and citrus, with a little pine and some bread. 4.5%

Check back next week for more beer and as ever check our Instagram for the latest brews and bands.

This week's brews!!

So here's your weekly update on what you can expect to see on draught throughout the coming week.

To begin we've got two beers from Gipsy Hill, the first of which is a collaboration with Three Boys, called Bogan. This New Zealand Pale Ale comes in at 5.5% and as you'd expect from a NZPA is super tropical with lots of mango and papaya going on. Crisp and hoppy with a nice dry finish. Definitely one for the bit of summer weather that's apparently on its way!

The next Gispy Hill brew is one of their core range, the Southpaw New World Amber Ale. A bittersweet beer where the sharp citrus of the hops fight against the notes of toffee and toasted malt sweetness. At 4.2% this is a great session choice.

A Rogue beer next and a classic at that. Dead Guy Ale has been a favourite of ours ever since we got our lips round its fruity body, earthy hops and toasted malt aromas. Sorry, think we got carried away there. Based on a German Maibock, its a deep honey colour and very well balanced. 6.5%

A new one for us next, Export Stout from Belfast brewery Boundary. Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with a tan head. The nose is liquorice while the taste is toffee, a little roasted malt, some hop bitterness and dried fruit. One we are very much looking forward to. 7%

We end on two ToØl beers. The first is a gin inspired (or 'ginspired' if you will) Gose brewed in collaboration with Pohjala. Named Ginie (In a Bottle) As you'd expect from a Gose its slightly tart, slightly salty. The nose has hints of juniper and coriander, hence the ginspiration, whilst the taste has some lemon, lime and ginger. Very refreshing and not overly sour so those who are yet to be converted, don't be scared! 4.2%

Lastly our second ToØl beer of the week, Tangerine Cream. Unsurprisingly this is a cream ale brewed with plenty of tangerines. Loads of Citra and Simcoe hops are balanced with the tangerines and then flaked wheats and outs are added for a smooth mouthfeel. 4.6%

Check back next week for more brews and remember you can always head over to our Instagram for the latest on brews, bottles and bands.

Signature Brewery Tap Takeover + The Pearl Harts

This Friday Leyton's Signature Brewery are taking over the whole pub!

Upstairs we've got The Pearl Harts tearing the place up.

"Tiny tiny girls that look like giants on stage…all you can think to do is ask them out for ice cream and all they want to do is wreck your house and firebomb your car…."

Downstairs we will have 4 of Signature brewery's best beers, Backstage IPA, Roadie, Anticipation and Black Vinyl, here's a quick run down of what we think of the beers, to decide for yourself you'll have to head down.

At 5.6% the Backstage IPA is the strongest of the beers on offer. Fruity malt and crisp hops on the nose, the taste is bitter with lots of hops and a little grapefruit.

Next up is the Roadie All Night IPA. This session pale has an aroma of sweet malts and a touch of peach whilst the taste is more bitter orange and mild hops. Its reasonably dry and is definitely the perfect session choice at 4.3%

Away from IPAs, we have a collaboration with New Zealand's Yeastie Boys, Anticipation. This Japanese Rice beer is the most subtle of the four beers on offer. The nose gives a hint of lemon and a little suggestion of yeast. The taste is slightly sweet, some cereals and a tad of orange. A really interesting beer which will have you going back for more. 5.4%

Finally we have a darker offering with Black Vinyl. This traditional dry stout has roasted malt and chocolate in both its aroma and flavour and is superbly balanced. Head Brewer Tom Bott says of it -  "Black Vinyl has a great chocolate and roasted flavour that develops and blossoms upon repeat visit... it is to beer what a record player is to the iPod.”

Beer or bands, you will not be disappointed.

Wakrat 'establish own republic' in Parliament Square before rolling up to their show at Black Heart last night on a double decker bus

Rage Against The Machine star Tim Commerford claims to have established his own republic in London's Parliament Square.

The bass player has formed a new punk rock trio, Wakrat, who say that have taken the land in central London as their own sovereign state in a protest aimed at the current political system.

The Republic of Wakrat claims to have exploited a technicality in micro nation law, arguing that the area is actually the property of medieval King Offa.

"This new state welcomes everyone of all ethnicities, backgrounds, genders, generations, sexualities dis/abilities and faiths and offers a fresh alternative to the current system - we stand for equality and free movement," the constitution reads.

"The current system is oppressive and elitist, promoting racist ideologies in order to push a self-serving agenda whilst an entire generation is put jeopardy. We condemn this behaviour and Republic Of Wakrat exists to expose it."

Wakrat and their fans toured London in a double decker bus emblazoned with  "#generationf****d" on Tuesday, before heading to Parliament Square to plant a red and black flag.

Commerford said: "We have put a s**t load of blood and sweat into this and we want it back.

"Our mission is to attack modern music and smash the grid. Unapologetic, unrelenting, unbridled and uncensored. Understood?"

Wakrat will release their debut album on November 11 to coincide with the US election.

The bus rolled up to their sold out show at Black Heart afterwards and ripped us all a new one! Video evidence coming soon!

Article from News & Star here.

Moor, Gipsy Hill, Siren and more!

Here's the lowdown on what we've got coming up on draught this week, boy are you in for a treat!

From Moor we've got Pale Modern Ale or PMA if you will.  Mango in color and brewed with hops from around the world and an all UK malt bill. Grapefruit and peach aromas with toffee malt, crisp hop and slightly fruity taste. Finishes dry. 5.3%. Moor are donating a portion of the proceeds of the sale of PMA to charity in support of Hardcore Hits Cancer so there's no excuses not to give this one a try!

Next up we've got a real Black Heart favorite, Gipsy Hill's Hepcat. This session IPA comes in at 4.6% and has a hop bill of Mosaic, Citra, Equinox and Motueka. A rich orange color, hoppy grassy aromas give way to big tropical fruit flavors.

Blueberry, mint, lime and orange? All in one brew? Don't put it past Siren's Tchuss. This Berliner Weisse is one we've been looking forward to for a while. Pours a dark amber, with a lemony funk aroma. Taste is typical Berliner with mild berries and a strong mint hit. Very smooth, a perfect refreshing beer for the summer. 5%

We're very proud to be able to call ourselves an Official Rogue Nation Embassy, and one of the perks of that is that we've got a rotating selection of Rogue's very best brews and bottles. Coming next we've got the appropriately named Brutal IPA. Hazy orange in color, a big citrus hop aroma with a spicy and bitter hop taste. The malt gives a caramel sweetness which helps to balance this brew. 6.3%

Finally we've got a little reminder of our childhood from Saugatuck Brewing Co, a Neapolitan Milk Stout. This is a classic dry stout with the triple threat of strawberry, vanilla and chocolate flavors. Dark black color with a light brown head, the aroma is lactose and strawberry. Tastes of neapolitan ice cream funnily enough, a little sweetness and medium body. We cannot wait to try this one! 6%
