When a young band harks back to music history, the music press often has the usual reflexes. The stigma of retro-rock is attached to the dull imitation of past times. This does not do justice to a band like Wucan. Wucan break up ossified genre conventions. They develop something new with creativity on the basis of a rock tradition that has its origins in the late 1960s and yet is much more than just Anglo-American. The Dresdeners do not so much follow the relevant acts, but pay tribute to their own history. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Hand on heart - who still knows hard rockers from the East like Babylon, Berluc or Blitzz?

From the beginning Wucan has followed a concept that ties up the loose ends of hard rock where others let them fall. They consciously refer to the European traditions of hard rock. But what distinguishes Wucan from epigones is the time reference. Wucan are no escapists. They locate themselves in the here and now. "Heretic tongues" is an album that speaks of this world - not of dragon slayers. This is how Wucan's new songs want to be perceived lyrically. It is not without reason that the audience is addressed in German, for example, when it comes to anger at "Fette Deutsche". Because it's about attitude. Because it's about message. Wucan give hard rock new topicality and urgency. Even with a cover version of the Klaus Renft Combo ("Zwischen Liebe und Zorn") the transposition into a contemporary reading succeeds amazingly well.

Bandleader Francis Tobolsky once again shows herself to be a charismatic singer, delivering a powerful and credible vocal performance. Her vocal parts are often multi-tracked, the arrangements subtly composed. Francis proves at the top of her game that she has advanced to become one of the best rock singers in Germany.

The band has also evolved playfully, experimenting not only with synthesizer and theremin, but also with complex soundscapes. In doing so, they surprise again and again with skillful musical style breaks from metal to disco, without diluting the original hard rock concept. The flute, which has often been used as a distinguishing feature, now joins the multitude of instruments and appears where it makes sense without dominating. "Heretic tongues" is not a mere stringing together of hits. It is an album to listen to.

With their third LP Wucan bring fresh wind into the German rock landscape and prove: Hardrock is not a pose - it's a lifestyle!
